Mercenary Captain (1st place Fantasy Single Golden Demon Germany 1999)
This guy has been painted as my first ever Golden Demon entry after somebody had told me GW would organize the first Games Day in germany in 1999. At this time I was realy fond of any renaisance stuff and old style White Dwarf paintings. I wanted to paint the Warhammer Quest Imperial Noble and decided to paint him as a sinister mercenary captain. To make him a bit more sinister I sculpted him a huge hat with feathers from green stuff (one of my first attempts with this stuff), and replaced the sword with are more usefull warhammer/halbert like weapon. Furthermore I removed the rim of his cloak as I never liked this on the original sculpt.

At this time I experimented a lot with inks and red/yellow/brown colourshemes. One interesting things with inks is you can adjust the glossyness of every part of a model in a way you want. Of course you can't varnish the model afterwards, but I never intended to use this uy for gaming. Downside of glossy miniature parts is the photograph realy bad because of the strong lightning that is necessary to make digital pictures. For the base sculpted a small bag with some coins he got for a job he did or he is hired to do. I think little features like this can add a lot of character to a model and it can be small details like this that get you the necessary votes from people who judge painting competitions. (He realy has eyes, but he never shows them)
